Help Haiti

The extent of the tragedy in Haiti is beyond comprehension. Canada has always had a close relationship with Haiti as a fellow francophone nation in the Americas. Haiti has always been an impoverished country of great hardship. It has been ruled by dictators such as "Papa Doc" Duvalier and then his son "Baby Doc". It has been a struggle to bring democracy to Haiti in recent years and its modern institutions have been very fragile. The country has been challenged by serious hurricanes and other natural disasters in the past. What has happened now with this earthquake goes to the point where the whole world needs to take action to reduce the human tragedy. There is now an opportunity to help Haiti to rebuild and modernize to solve the long term problems.
Canadians are of course very fortunate people and our friends in Haiti need our help now more than ever. If you have not done so yet donate to the Red Cross or other legitimate relief organizations. It is our duty to help.
